F451 Fishbowl #5: Pages 80-102

Last Tuesday's fishbowl was an improvement--keep going! Think still about jumping into a hotseat, strengthening your comments with direct quotes, and remaining constantly engaged in the online conversation.

  1. What do you think will happen later in the book with Montag and the books that he stole?

Also do you think that Captain Beatty has books? Or any other Firefighters at his station?

  2. On page 81, Montag says, "My wife's dying." Does Montag think that she will try suicide again?

  3. I think that the books that Montag has are making Mildred crazy. (maybe crazier then she already is).

    ReplyDelete
  4. do you think that guy will frame the firemen and himself so he doesn't look like he did it?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Will the setting of the books in the firehouse work? Why or Why not?
    Alec-
I do not think that Mildred will try and commit suicide because she likes her life, also she could just be brought back anyways.

  6. If the books are planted in the firehouse and no one sees them panting them then what do you think will happen to all of the firefighters in the firehouse at the time?

    ReplyDelete
  7. What do you think will happen if Montag and Faber get caught trying to frame the other firemen?

  8. -Alec,
I also had that same question. But I don't think that Mildred is going to try to commit suicide again. When Montag tells Faber that his wife is dying, I think that he means her personality is going away and he doesn't know who is wife is anymore.

  9. Alec-
I think what Montag means when he says his wife is dying is that she denies the fact that she is unhappy which makes her a different person. When she tries to commit suicide part of her dies and that is what Guy is saying.

  10. Alec W- Yes I think that she will try suicide again because she has tried it multiple times again. I don't think he means she is literally dieing though. I think he means that the trust in the people are dead not that the people themselves are physically dieing.

I think that Montag and Faber would be sent to prison for the rest of their lives because of all that they went to in order frame some of the other firefighters.

  12. Zach H-
I do not think that Capitan Beatty has books but I believe that other fireman may have books.

  13. Alec W-

I think there is a possablitity that she may try and commit suicide again, but i think that Montag is talking more about her dying inside, and how she has been taken over by the technology, and she is losing herself.

  14. If a fire was set at the firehouse, how would they put it out? They don't have water, they have kerosene.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Alec-
No I do not think that she will attempt suicide again because after she did that first time when the doctors fixed her she was great and loved life again and I don't think she remembers what happened or that she even tried so I think she will just live her life.

When Montag says "my wife is dying" i think he might mean her faith in Montag or about how she feels about the books he is trying to save.

  17. Inner Circle: Why does Faber get so mad when Montag rips up the book?

-I think he gets mad because he likes books so much, books are his life. He compares to the lady that was burned with her books. They both react harshly when they see books being destroyed.

  18. Zach h: If a fire was set at the firehouse, how would they put it out? They don't have water, they have kerosene.

    * I don't think there ever would be a chance for a fire at the firehouse because all the houses fireproof, I think that includes the firehouse.

  19. On page 86, " the salamander devours his tail! Ho god!" what do you think the salamander represents? The government? Society?

-do you think that guy will frame the firemen and himself so he doesn't look like he did it?

That is a good question, because if a lot of the other firemen have books in there rooms, and Guy doesn't it will make it pretty obvious that he was the one who did it. I think he will only put books in some of their rooms, and not all of them so he is not the only one without books.

  21. Why do you think this part of the book is named the Sieve and the Sand.

  22. Zach K
do you think that guy will frame the firemen and himself so he doesn't look like he did it?
I think Guy will have to frame himself also because the firemen would make sure that everyone knew that they didn't have any books and they would probably let people know who framed them if they found out.

    ReplyDelete
  23. -Yanni,
If Montag and Faber get caught trying to frame all the other firemen, I think that Capatain Beatty might punish them really bad. Maybe he would just burnn them or go to their houses and burn their houses down.

    ReplyDelete
  24. What does the Salamander mean not only to Guy but to the firehouse as well?

    ReplyDelete
  25. This question is more about the whole book, not just the last section we read: Why do the firemen have to burn the houses, why can't they just take the books out and burn them?

i think that if they do get cot they will be killed for treason

Adding onto that i think that the books are his life, but its not why he is getting so mad. Hes getting mad at what the books represent, Hope, Intelligence, Sanity, and everytime he sees a book burn or be destroyed he loses a little bit of all those things.

  28. Logane:

The salamander was believed to come from the devil because of its impervious view on fire.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Kiely O- I think that the salamander represents Montag because he is a fireman and he is going to plant the books in the fire house. He is going to try to make the fire men and the fire house implode on itself.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Alec w:Why do the firemen have to burn the houses, why can't they just take the books out and burn them?

    * They have to burn the entire house because there might be books unseen; books that the firefighters cannot find, so they just burn the house just to be safe.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Zach H-
I think that this part in the book is named Sieve in the Sand because maybe Guy will get stuck in the sand trying to pull off the plan of setting up the firehouse just like quicksand it will sallow them up because of the grief it will give them.

  32. Why are books so Important to people like Faber and his fellow professors? Is it not the books themselves or what they symbolize, the world before it went Insane and lost Humanity?

I think it is because books are illegal and there has to be a bigger message than just taking them away. If someone in our world today steals something they don't just take it away, they have further punishment also.

  34. On page 100 Mrs. Phelps says, "I-I," sobbed Mrs. Phelps, "don't know, don't know, I just don't know, oh oh..." Why is Mrs. Phelps crying after Montag reads the poem to Mildreds friends?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Kiely-
The salamander in this quote represents the firemen and the whole process of burning books. IF the firemen have books themselves then by law they would have to burn their own houses. Like a salamander biting his own tail the firemen would have to harm themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Logan-
I think that the salamander is a symbol for how the firehouse will destroy itself because everyone is starting to hate th firemen and I think it is a symbol for the destruction of the firehouse to come.

  37. -Kiely,
I think that books are important to Faber and other fellow professors, because that's all what they had before the world went insane. That's why Faber went crazy when Montag started to rip out the pages in the Bible because books are basically Faber's life.

it says that " did you see that clara dove five-minute romance last night in your wall" so dose guys wife still thinks that the walls are the most important thing ?

Why are books so Important to people like Faber and his fellow professors? Is it not the books themselves or what they symbolize, the world before it went Insane and lost Humanity?

I think that they want the books so bad for what they symbolize. They are able to read it in a deeper meaning. I think that they know that there are problems in the world but they are not able to express what they think.

  40. Do you think he will ever go back to work?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Kiely- The books are more than something to read to Faber. To Faber, the books are a way of the past, something to remind him of how the world use to be when they had choice and had the freedom to do what they want. They are something to keep them sane while the rest of the world around them collapses into a robot-like society.

  42. What do you think caused the government to implement this law that no books are allowed?

Do you think he will ever go back to work?
I don't believe he will go back to work because he understands that what he was doing was wrong. However, I think it would probably be a good idea for him to go back to work because if he stopped coming into work it would make it more obvious that he was the one that framed them.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Zach H, I do not think that Montag will go back to work because he has decided that burning books is wrong and it has to end.

  45. -Zach K,
I think that Mildred thinks that the walls are the most important thing because she always refers to it as her family to Montag and to all of her friends.

I dont think montag will ever burn a book past this point, he is to fascinated and interested in the books. He might go to work but he will not do the burning.

I think Mrs. Phelps was crying because she had feelings after hearing that poem that she has never felt before. It scares her and pulls out emotions she has never felt, and envokes a deeper meaning in her that like Guy Montag, she cannot understand. No one in this society except for the elders who lived in the time of books and intelligence and sanity, knows what the purpose of books are why they were wrote, it scares and entices them, it draws them in.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Zach H-
I think it's to late for Guy yo go back to work. He now knows what books can do and how important they are so I don't think he will ever be able to burn books again.

  49. When Montag gives the book to Beatty, it seemed like he was not that mad. I thought Beatty would have punished Montag more, but he kind of just let this incident slide, and gave him another chance. Do you think this suggests that Beatty has stolen books before too? Because I thought he would be a lot more mad, but he is giving him another chance maybe because he knows what he is going through.

i think that it was to control the people more and to make them stupid so they cant over throw the government

  51. In the inner circle the question came up "If another war is starting who is fighting it?"

I think that this is going to be a war between three different types of people and things. The government is going to be mad at the firehouses because they think that all of the firemen will be taking books and all of the fire men will be under investigation by the government. The firemen in the town's that are being investigated will know that they were not the ones to put books in the firehouse so they will start to try to find out who framed them so they will be fighting the community and this will just cause a larger revolt from the community. When the community starts to attack the firemen then the government will have to also protect the firemen while they are investigating them. The entire country will start to fight each other and it would become a new Revolution.
In a way this could be good for the country because power might change hands and books might not be illegal still and things would be able to go back to normal, or at least some what normal.

    Zach H:

I think that Montag knows what is going to happen if he gets caught so he is going to use the most secrecy that he can. If he does get caught then he will be sent to jail for as long as possibly.

  52. how would kids go to school and learn if they also have to burn textbooks? The teachers could not learn what to teach them because they don't know what to teach. Also, could you blog or write a document on word.

I think that he will not go back to work because he loves books so much now and his job is to burn books so if he goes to work he wouldn't do anything so there would be no point for him to go back to work.

I agree, because Mrs. Phelps hasn't heard something so beautiful before in her life and it got to her and felt emotions that she hasn't felt before. Like Kiely siad, Montag and Mrs. Phelps have no idea what the poem means, but when Montag read it, it was so beautiful, Montag has no idea what it means. So I think that Mrs. Phelps is crying because it was beautiful and she didn't understand it. Again, Like Kiely said above, only the elders know what books mean because they were around them for along time before the started to ban books.

  56. I agree with Kiely that if we had to save three books that we should save religious books such as the Bible first because the people have to have something to believe in.

I don't think he will because he likes books now, and he realizes that going around burning houses is wrong.

I do believe that Mildred will try to commit suicide again. She and many others have done it already, and the have almost no threat to themselves when the do this because they can simply be revived by their new machines.

    Zach H-
I think the section of the book is called the Sieve and the Sand for a couple of reasons. First of all, a sieve is used to seperate sall materials, such as sand from gold. This can be taken metaphorically and you could imagine it as a way of saying that they want to seperate the books from their society. The sand is what the books are; nothing but rubbish that will cause trouble. So they remove it with a "sieve", and by doing this make their society "better", in their point of view.

    Kiely O-
The books are so important to Faber because it connects him to something that has almost been completely lost. He can relate them back to his life, where books were allowed to be read freely. They are a connection to the time and history where all was good, where you could do what you wanted. Now that all of that is gone, Faber has only one way to go back to it, and that is reading books. So if any of them get destroyed, it only makes sense that he would be sad; they ARE his life, in a matter of speaking. Without them, he would have nothing to live for but become like the rest of the human robots.

    Zach K-
The walls are definitely more important to Mildred than anything else. She is addicted to them; she calls them her "family", and becomes very irritated without them. She has no care for books or anything, not even her own husband or her own life. She would rather kill herself than give up the walls. And, she always says that she wants a fourth tv wall. I think that if she gets this last wall, it will become a "box" to her and she will never leave. As addicted as Mildred currently is, the fourth wall would only make things worse, beyond repair, and Mildred would quite possibly be more mindless than all of the others in this society.
