F451 Fishbowl #4: Pages 63-80

Welcome to your fourth fishbowl!

Much like last week, I'd like you to pick up the pace and challenge yourself a bit on the outer circle. What kind of challenges should we take on, you ask?

Try these:

Challenge #1: Bring a quotation from the reading into at least one of your posts.

Challenge #2: Get into a hotseat, if only for a brief moment.

Challenge #3: Try to offer a few more comments; as a class, we should be averaging around 80-100 comments per discussion (right now, we're averaging around 50).

75 comments:

  1. What happens during the train scene? Why are all the people yelling "Denham's Dentrifice?" It starts on page 78 and goes to the end of the reading.

  2. This comment has been removed by the author.

  3. so do people know that Guy has books in his house?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Adam-

I am with you about the train scene. I do not know what is going on either and I kind of got lost during that part.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Do you think that the mechanical hound will alert someone that Montag and Mildred have books?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think that during the train scene, there is maybe a song playing very loudly, and all the people are trying to sing along. It would seem weird for us, but then again a lot of other stuff in this book seems strange to us as well.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I don't think he will tell his friends at the fire house about the books even though he might want to

    ReplyDelete
  8. Do you think people are worried and disturbed that the bibles are being burnt too?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Are they sure it was the hound outside their door?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Will people start to know that guy has the books? and will they try to get him in trouble?

    ReplyDelete
  11. do you think that guy has the last bible? and why is Faber so eager to see it?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Colton

-I don't think people know for sure, but Beatty, the old professor and others are starting to get suspicious.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Logan-

I am pretty sure it already alerted Beatty and he knows MOntag has the book. But like he said before, he will give him 24 hours to burn the book.

    ReplyDelete
  14. -Colton,
I think that Captain Beatty knows that Montag has a book, because he has been sending the dog around the house keeping a close eye on Montag and what he is doing. Since Montag got sick, I think that he knows something is up.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I believe this could go either way. I believe that he wont tell on guy but he is also the captain and he might feel like he needs to honor his job and tell the government.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Logan-
That seems very likely, seeing as it has been spying on him. It wouldn't just follow him around for no reason, Beatty even had said it only does what it's programmed to do. So someone either already knows he has books, or are suspicious and are trying to find out by sending the hound. If the dog finds any, then Guy will be in serious trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Inner Circle- Do you think Beatty will report Montag?

-I think that Beatty will not report Montag because he said all firemen go through this phase and maybe Beatty has books to.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Jd-
I don't think there can be a perfect society.
With every utopia there's going to be at least one person who's not happy with the way things are. People have different opinions and we can't all agree on everything.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Will Montag's life be destroyed by how he has all of these books?
    Colton -
I think that they may have a clue that there is something going on but they do not know what it is yet and want to find out.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Logan-

Do you think that the mechanical hound will alert someone that Montag and Mildred have books?

Yes, I do think that they will eventually find the books. When they do, I think that Montag will stand up for the books like the old lady did and he will take a stand against society.

    ReplyDelete
  21. -Nickc
I think some people are worried and disturbed that the bibles are being burnt because some people care about books and want to read the books. Some people would be sad that the thing the treasure is being burned and they can't do anything to stop it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ty B-

I think Guy does have the last bible. He said so, or at least that is the last one in that part of the world. Faber wants to see it soo bad because it reminds him a lot of what the world used to be, like he said before they made Jesus and God a "part of the family".

    ReplyDelete
  23. Why was the mechanical hound at the house?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Logan
I think Montag will communicate with the hound and so the dog wont indicate anything so i think Montag should be okay. But it is possible that the dog could give it away.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ty B
do you think that guy has the last bible? and why is Faber so eager to see it?

I think it could be the last bible left and thats why Faber wants to see it so bad.

    ReplyDelete
  26. John N- But wasn't Harrison Bergeron a perfect society even after he broke out of jail and was killed?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ty B-do you think that guy has the last bible?

-I am going to add to this question. Is there still religion even though bibles have to be burned?

    ReplyDelete
  28. What would happen to our society if one day the fireman started burning books and if it becomes like the book?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Do you think there is any symbolism in that the book that Guy happened to take from the burning ladies house was a bible? What role does religion play in this book?

    ReplyDelete
  30. What is the religion in this book? If they burn the bible, do they burn the torah and the qu'ran?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ty-
I think that Montag may know where the last bible is but he does not have it and Faber wants to see it because there are so little of them out there.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ty B-

I think that Montag might really have the last bible. And this is very significant as well, because the bible has been very important in many peoples religious aspects. So important, in fact, that people world wide would follow the Christian faith. If it is the last one, then an entire extremely used religion would be extinct.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Inner Circle- The last bible in part of this world?
I think that this may show in ways that the other parts of the world are different then what America has right know.

    ReplyDelete
  34. -Alec,
I agree with you that Captain Beatty won't report Montag about having books. But my question is that do you think that Mildred will report Montag?

I think that Mildred will report Montag because she is freaked out that he has about 20 books and when he is done pulling them out she is trying to burn them and when one of the books touch Mildred's foot, she freaks out like the book was poison.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Alec W-

Yes indeed there is still religion. But, it is nothing like what you see today, they made it more like a family thing where Jesus is like common in society and part of the home, so he has become more downplayed in this society than what we view him as today.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Jd-
Harrison Burgeronb might have been a perfect society only because people were brainwashed into thinking any different. I don't think that kind of society could happen anyway. If the government was going to handicap you and equalize everyone, would you fight back?

    ReplyDelete
  37. John-

Since they are in AMerica the only main religion is Christianity so they burn bibles and don't really care for the other religions.

    ReplyDelete
  38. do you think that as montage said this might be the only bible left that America has lost its faith in god and the American dream?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Do you think the government will keep one book or one bible from being burnt?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Why do you feel the government has hidden the true state of the rest of the world from its citizens? if you lived in a different part of the world at this time, what would you think of America? Would you envy them or dispise them?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Nick--
I don't think the government wants there to be a religion. Religions set people apart from each other and that would defeat the purpose of having an all equal society

    ReplyDelete
  42. Ty-
Do you think that guy has the last bible? and why is Faber so eager to see it?

Guy doesn't have the last bible because other countries probably have bibles. Guy probably has the last bible in the U.S. but not the entire world. I think the outside world reads and is sealed off from the U.S. I think people are to lazy and are sealed off to protect them from worries and experiencing emotions that hurt them. I think the government wants everyone to live a happy life but people are trying to kill themselves left and right. A person even burnt herself for her books.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Zach H -
I think that if our firemen were to burn books as they do in the book. It would become similar because of how everything is changing in society now.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Page 76 "See what you're doing? You'll ruin us! Who's more important, me or that Bible?" Asks Mildred

    * Why do you think the Bible is so important to Guy Montag?

    ReplyDelete
  45. inner circle - if the bible guy has is the last one in that part of the world do you think that in other countries that they are still reading books?

i think that it could go either way. other countries could very well be reading books and they could be the same because we are trying to spread are government system to other countries all the time so they could of spread it to other countries that reading books are harmful to the government and the people so it could go either way

    ReplyDelete
  46. John-

If the government was going to handicap you and equalize everyone, would you fight back?

I think that the majority of the people would fight back and no one would obey the laws or anything. I also agree with you on how that would be impossible to make everyone equal.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Zack K-
I do not think that Montag has lost his faith in God and the American Dream he has hope in his life and he sort of living the Dream he has all of these books in his house and his house has not been burnt down yet.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Nickc

I think the government are afraid of people reading the bible because it might cause them to rebel against the government so they probably want to burn as many books as they can get their hands on.

    ReplyDelete
  49. on page 73 it says "we've started and won two atomic wars since 1990" do you think that this would or even could happen?

    ReplyDelete
  50. -Zach H,
If the firemen start to burn books in our society and burn the houses down, we would become a disaster and wouldn't be able to live. Everybody would be scared of everybody and we would have to live like the society in Fahrenheit 451.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Eduardo-

I don't think they ONLY burn the bible. I think that they would burn any book, regardless of it's significance. Any books for any other religion found would be burnt as well, for all books are seen as "evil" in this society.

    ReplyDelete
  52. John N- I don't think the government wants there to be a religion. Religions set people apart from each other and that would defeat the purpose of having an all equal society.

-I agree with John on this topic. If they wanted religion they wouldn't be burning bibles.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Mike--
I don't think the other countries have bibles. It says earlier that most other countries hate the U.S. I don't think they would have anything to do with us, and Christianity is our main religion.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Nick-
I do think that the government will keep a book such as the bible because of what it means for the country and they will soon try and fix what has happened in this world.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Why do you feel the government has hidden the true state of the rest of the world from its citizens? if you lived in a different part of the world at this time, what would you think of America? Would you envy them or dispise them?

I would hate the U.S. if I was in another country because U.S. would always be fed while the other countries weren't fed. The U.S. would be living in luxury when every day it would be a fight for life and death for other countries. This is probably why U.S. is expected to go to war and is prepared with fighter planes, because the rest of the world is jealous and wants a piece.

    ReplyDelete
  56. John N- I wouldn't fight back because I wouldn't know I am getting brainwashed. Fahrenheit 451 is a brainwashed society. They all believe that books have always been burnt instead of read except for a few people who have books and have read them. If a perfect society were to be achieved, which they are trying to do in Fahrenheit 451, wouldn't it make sense to take out the ones who are causing the trouble, like Clarisse, and try to re-brainwash the people they have effected, like Montag.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Do you think its really worth killing yourself in this society instead of trying to fight back?

    ReplyDelete
  58. What is the significance, if any, of what Mildred said to Montag "books aren't people. You read and I look all around, but there isn't anybody." (Bradbury 73).

    ReplyDelete
  59. Do you think that more than one person has the last bible? are all of them gone except maybe one?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Zach K-

I dont think that this could ever happen in our present day society. This is because today people are more concerned with money or power than war, and noone would wanna start a nuclear war that would surely annhilate the world. The author lived in a time where The Iron Curtain was decended upon Europe, and the atomic scare was real. There was an arms race between the two biggest super powers in the world, and atomic war seemed enevitable.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Alec-

They want religion, yes, and they have made their own. They have no need for the bible or any other religious book and simply burn them like any other book. They made their own religion, where everyone is part of a "family", and they are all equal.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Anton
I think the bible is so important because its first of all the bible and second of all it is the most important book in the world so he would want keep the bible as his last book and as societies last book.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I agree that it would be easier to just dispose of troublemakers, but people could still fight back. In the American Revolution, the British set up public executions of our leaders. They were trying to turn people away from fighting for freedom. We still fought and gained independence. Like i said earlier, there will always be one person who isn't happy with the way things are.

    ReplyDelete
  64. -Nick,
I don't think it is necessary to kill yourself because if you try, they can just replace your blood and it would be okay. I don't see why you would fight back because there is nothing to fight back about.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Zach K

I do think it could happen but it would not be very effective because there would not be much left after the first war and the people would be in such awe that i do not think a second war would be effective at all considering that it would destroy everything including hope and materials.

    ReplyDelete
  66. nickc-

Why do you claim that the bible is the most important book in he world? It might be for some, but there could be other more important books depending on your religion.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Nick-- I think people will fight and die, not just die. I think most people would rather die for something than they would to just kill themselves nd take the easy way out.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Do you think that the reason why all the countries hate America is because they kill people and burn houses due to having books?

    ReplyDelete
  69. -Zach K
on page 73 it says "we've started and won two atomic wars since 1990" do you think that this would or even could happen?

I think that this couldn't happen because of the U.N. and also all the programs that have been set-up to remove nukes. If atomic wars even did happen I think Iran would start the nuclear war and bomb Israel.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Ty B-

Who ever said that other countries hate America? Is this just an assumption or is there something in the book where it says this?

    ReplyDelete
  71. John N said
there will always be one person who isn't happy with the way things are.

I agree with this, no matter what the situation is some people will not agree with it or are to ignorant to try to understand it.

    ReplyDelete
  72. -NickC
I don't think that in their society it's better to kill yourself than fight back. However, it is better to do something instead of nothing; In other words, die for whats right instead of sitting and waiting for something to change.

    ReplyDelete
  73. -ZachK
I honestly am not sure what our future maybe in terms of WMD's but I will say that there will always be war in the World and it's just part of what makes us human. With our advances in technology its tough to say if we will have a atomic war or an even more dangerous war.

We're afraid that Advancing our technology may end up making us less human but honestly we got to where we are now due to an increase in technology and im sure no one had in the back of their mind that we would be over run by our own tech. So what are we really afraid of? Is it truely being brainwashed to the point where we are oblivious to the world around us? Or something else.

What would happen to our society if one day the fireman started burning books and if it becomes like the book?

I dont think our society reads very much anymore already. That is, with books. Now we use our technology to read and do all sorts of things. I think the reality of it is is that we are smart enough to realize total destruction of our culture and way of life. That being said I think one of our ways of life is change, weither that be in technology, economy, and culture. We're afraid that Advancing our technology may end up making us less human but honestly we got to where we are now due to an increase in technology, economy and culture and I'm sure no one had in the back of their mind that this could be a bad thing for the world. So what are we really afraid of? Is it truely being brainwashed to the point where we are oblivious to the world around us? Or something else.
