I think books were banned because when people read books it could inspire them to revolt against the government, or something like that.

  7. I think that the firefighters burn the books because they want to suppress the ideas floating around. To not let other people know certain thoughts that could hurt the government or not make everyone equal.

  8. Zach- I dont think they would know what to do if there was a fire not caused by books.

  9. Does guy burn books on his own time or is that part of his job?

  10. On page 27, Captain says " It doesn't think anything we don't want it to think."

-Do you think this is what the government is doing; only letting people think what the government lets people think?

  11. Why do you think Clarisse asked Guy if he was happy?

  12. I think that books were banned and burned because the government didnt want anyone to overthrow what they are doing and learn to much information.

    Why were books banned?

Books were banned because it can give people a better knowledge over people and it may cause the people to think about what the govenment has done to them and it may cause them to revolt

Burning books is his job. He is a fireman and his job is to go find the books and burn them.

  16. Zach K-
I really don't think they would care if a fire started without then causing it. They want things to burn, and if there is a chance for a book to burn along with it, they would definitely let it keep going.

I think Clarisse thinks that Montag is unhappy so he purposely burns things.

    - I think that clarisse asked Guy if he was happy because maybe she expects something of a fireman and is asking questions to understand more.

Yes in this book the government is wanting the people to think only what the government wants it to think because the government is trying to suppress other's ideas and the books.

  21. Ethan -

"Why do the fireman burn the books instead of the houses?"

    Me -

I believe they burn the books to remove the past from their society to allow history to almost repeat itself since no one will be educated on society's past. If you are a leader and you keep your citizens uneducated and removed from the outside world, then you will be able to have your control over them. A good example of where this happened is North Korea in the 1960's-70's. Their leader had schools teach things that weren't necessarily true in order to brainwash the young minds at an early age and keep them uneducated from there after. The burning of the books is a symbol of the government removing its past to start anew in a dark age.

I dont think anything can catch fire in this world. Guy says on page 8 that "houses have always been fireproof."

  23. Zach- I think she O D on pills because she is depressed ad sad and maybe she doesn't think guy is home enough.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Zach K-

why did his wife O.D. on the pills?

In the book it said that she took two then probably forgot and took two more and probably forgot. Maybe that is the reason.

  25. Zack K-
Perhaps Guy's wife overdosed on sleeping pills because she maybe felt something she didn't understand, such as maybe even meeting someone like Clarisse. That is a total guess, but it would make sense. She wouldn't take it because she is so not used to it and decides to take her own life for it.

  26. Zach H

I think she asked that because their society is not at a good time and its turning into something different. He burns books and that job doesn't seem like its to fun.

It seems as if this book's setting is in the future because Clarisse thought that firefighters used to put out fires instead of starting them.

    Me -

I agree with Eduardo because inside the book Clarisse says, "Is it true that long ago fireman put fires OUT instead of going to start them?". Even though I think the book's setting is the future, I do not believe that it is set too far from the present. Since the government is so different and their past is being removed, everyone is forgetting how society used to be. An example of how the government brainwashes people is when Montag replies to Clarisse, "No. Houses have always been fireproof, take my word for it".

  28. How did the lizard on Guy's jacket represent being a fireman?

"Why do the fireman burn the books instead of the houses?"

Firemen burn the books instead of the houses because they want to suppress the books and hide the ideas. It was like having a new slate because kids wouldn't learn the ideas from the books and then the government could teach the children what ever they wanted.

  30. Who is Clarrise? and does she have a bigger role to play in the rest of the story?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Books were banned because books contain history and facts of the past, if people knew firefighters used to put out fires or that books contain important facts, people would revolt or protest against the government for hiding the history.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Eduardo P-

I think this book is set in the future also. The society in the book is very weird and different from ours. It is very weird because it says they have to make the billboards 200 feet long so people can see them.

    - I think that the lizard symbolizes how firemen kinda have to be sly and quick so that they don't get caught kind thing they have to be sly but fast and that's what i think it is.

  34. if guy found a book with clarrise would he act or would he stay quite

  35. Eduardo P-
The book is definitely set in the future, what with the robot dog and special machinery. There are obviously a lot of technical advancements, plus what you had said that firemen no longer fight fire but start it instead.

  36. YanniK- How did the lizard on Guy's jacket represent being a fireman?

-The salamander is related to fire since they are ancient, almost mythological, they believe that salamanders are unaffected by flames and could live in fire.

  37. John- Clarisse is the girl guy meets on the corner everyday and she walks with him. I think she will play a bigger role in the future she will help him some how.

  38. i think montague wants to be able to have the same mind set as clarisse does, and wishes he knew what she knew.

  39. Do you think that guy has taken any books from a house before he burned them?

  40. John
    - I think that Clarisse will play a bigger role later in the story because if she keeps talking to Guy they might become close and they could start being firemen together.

I doubt it. It's against his job.
    A related question-
What is the punishment for having a book?

  44. Yanni K -

How did the lizard on Guy's jacket represent being a fireman?

    Me -

The lizard on Montag's arm and the phoenix on his chest are symbols for fire. The lizard that you are referring to is a salamander and according to ancient mythology, the salamander has always been associated with fire. Since Montag starts fires it is only fitting that he has symbols that represent who he is according to his occupation or place in society.

  45. What would happen if they found a firefighter with the illegal books.

  46. colton- i do think people want to escape this life and they will go to any measure to leave it. Even though they cant die they will be happy with being on the very edge of death then they will be saved.

Do you think that guy has taken any books from a house before he burned them?

I think that he did because after a while he probably get curious.

do people want to die and escape this society?
I do not think that the amount of sucide is based only on the bookless society, because it seems that we haven't heard of many successful suicides so far. It doesn't make sense to me that people would continue trying to kill themselves if they are always saved.

    -YanniK
    Why were books banned?
While I do agree with some people answers about
causing revults against the government, I do believe that there is more to it than that. We have been lead to believe that this book is set in the future, and I think that it may have to do with the environmental issues of deforrestation and how books use a large amount of paper.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yanni-
I think booksa were banned in this society for the same reasons they are banned in communist countries todday. They are banned because the government does not want their people to become educated because if they do they might see the flaws in their government and revolt.

    Zach H-
I think Clarisse asks Montag if he is happy because she sees a sort of depression deep within himself. My whole impression of Montag is that deep down he hates his job and deep down there is some justice inside of him.
