I think that Amir still loves his wife. we have not gotten any clues that he doesn't like him. so i think that he still loves her even though she is infertile.
NickC- I think Amir has always loved his wife. He shows it somewhat on page 191 that "...fifteen years of marriage had turned us into mind readers." This shows me that to be married for 15 years and to be able to tell what the other is thinking shows a deep mystical bond.
Sean, I think that she is ok with him going to Pakistan because she wants him to rekindle his origins. But at the same time she would like him to stay because it is not safe there.
Zach B- While literaly she can't hold the baby because she isn't fertile, I believe it has a deeper meaning than just this. It might show that better things can't spring from what has happened; Amir has been cursed by his cowardice and even now he cannot repent for what he didn't do. The author shows this through the act of a baby. He and his wife can't have one.
Ty B.- I dont think he is second guessing his relationship, i think that he is just not fully attached because he is still hiding something from her, its holding him back from loving her
How do you think Soroya feels about Amir going to Pakistan?
I think that Soraya is okay with him going to Pakistan because it is what he has to do and she understands that he needs to go see Rahim Kahn. She might be a little worried about it because something severe could go wrong like he could maybe get killed or hurt.
Zach K- I think thats supposed to be the point. Hassan did absoluteely nothing to the taliban besides the fact that he was a Hazara. It's like Hitler all over again. The only thing that can protect you is your race.
I agree with sean because if my wife was going somewhere dangerous to see an old friend i would be worried like Soraya is because there is the risk of getting hurt and posibly killed in a dangerous place.
Zach, I also agree with what you think about the time length. It is a little weird if he has waited that long to just all of the sudden jump in and go see him.
Zach K- I agree with you. I would be skeptical as well if someone I knew randomly decided to go to Pakistan after about two decades. She doesn't know them and they don't know her, so it seems pretty strange to her. I'm pretty sure Soroya is also a bit worried about Amir. It must be something very important or dangerous for him to head back after such a long time.
If you look into your Kite Runner book on page 189, there is a line which reads "...I could almost feel the emptiness in Soraya's womb" this quote is important to the question because this quote is evidence that Soraya, Amir's wife, is infertile. Soraya is unable to bare a child because of this aspect.
I think ever since hassan was rapped amir has had a hole in his life. He hasnt let that go and never will. He knew hassan was his best friend and it was to hard for him to watch or help. He was confused that night and now it has haunted him his whole life and will for the rest of his life.
on page 191 Amir is going on a walk to think about things, when soraya offers to go with him, he says no, he'd rather be alone. Why do you think this is?
I think Soraya is mainly worried about Amir. He hasn't been back to Afghanistan or Pakistan since 20 years ago, he doesnt have a gun for protection, he is a coward. I surely wouldnt want someone like that to go into the middle of a war.
It is unbelieveable how the Taliban don't allow kite running and have banned many other things. To this day the have been a major problem in Afghanistan and have been making Afghanistan hell.
Zach B, I think Amir has felt so alone for so many years. Yeah he has a wife, and his dad. But i think the thing that could of made Amir feel happy is if Hassan was there with him.
zach- i think amirs reaction would be that he is very proud of hassan getting a girl. At the same time he would be sad for leaving him and not saying good be and he would just be shy i think.
I don't think that Amir loves his wife because they haven't had a child yet, or if they are even going to have a child, but they don't really have a good relationship anymore. They act like they are friends because Amir says "We still did something, but the whispers were about school, my new book, a giggle over someone's ridiculous dress at a party" (Hosseini 193). They still have a relationship just more of a friendship than a love relationship.
Just to the question of does Amir feel good about going back I think that he may feel good because Rahim Khan is his only friend left in Pakistan because his dad died and everything. But it may not be good because thats where lots of bad things have happened like being rapped in the ally so I don't know if he is happy or sad about it. I think he may want to go back because on page 192 Rahim Khan says, "Come. There is a way to be good again." I think this is a good thing for Rahim to say because he knows that something happened to Amir and he is telling him that if he comes back he can see Rahim and he can possibly make things good again from what happened to him and the thing that has been making him think so much about his past struggles.
Do you believe that Amir's life is just? Has everything been done in justice to how Amir has lived his life and the actions and decisions he has made? I think this can be argued from different views.
Amir refuses to walk with Soraya not because he doesn't love her, but because he has a lot on his mind wether he should face his fears and go back to the place where all the nightmares began.
I agree, like Amir feels good to be back in his home town but what happened to Hassan and Rahim Khan being sick is also making it difficult for him "'Rahim Khan is very sick.' A fist clenched inside me with those words."
Nick C- I am pretty sure that "their culture" (I believe you are talking about the Taliban and Afghanistan) is too ignorant to realize this kind of stuff. They have a lust for power and do not care what happens to the denizens of the country, as long as the get more money and power. It happens everywhere in the world, you will ALWAYS find people that will do so many unnecessary things just to gain money and power. So no, they don't realize this, but it is simply because they are so power hungry that they are blinded.
Tristin On page 191 Amir is going on a walk to think about things, when soraya offers to go with him, he says no, he'd rather be alone. Why do you think this is?
I think this is because when he thought of going back to Aganistan he was haunted by his memory of Hassan. He might have felt like he was going to have too much emotions and he was worried he would tell Soroya about seeing Hassan get raped.
Nick- I dont think that the culture realizes that rape isn't the right punishment because they may be what they believe in. They probably have different beliefs than we do so that may be right for them do to that.
I don't think Amir's life is anything like fair. He is always thrust into situation that he doesn't know how to deal with. He is a cowarrd but that can't be his fault. It's more likely the way he was raised from when he was born, he always had Hassan to defend him. Life isn't fair, but make the best of what you have.
I think that Hassan wants his sons life to be the best that it could. On page 212 it says, "Hassan would take sohrab to the zoo to see Marjan the lion, or to the cinema. Hassan taught him how to use the slingshot....Hassan taught him to read and write." So i think that Hassan is trying to make Sohrabs life that best it could be even though there is a war going on right outside their house.
Tristin On page 191 Amir is going on a walk to think about things, when soraya offers to go with him, he says no, he'd rather be alone. Why do you think this is?
I think amir says that not because he doesn't love her but more so because he needed to get his thoughts straight and he needed to be on his own to figure things out
I think that Amir's life is not just because he is very selfish with his experiences in that he does not share or tell anyone what had happened but the whole situation would have been better if he told people and was opened to talk about it.
What would be the reaction if Amir went back to Afghanistan while Hassan and his wife were still living in the house?
I think that Amir wouldn't know what to do if Hassan was there. He would be overwhelmed with emotions that would be joyful, grief, and sadness. He probbaly would of asked him to come back home with him and live together again and make everything right.
Sean-
How do you think Soroya feels about Amir going to Pakistan?
I think Soroya is very scared for Amir. She hears all the stories of the Taliban and killings going on. She is very scared about his life and losing a husband. Also, they hear about the bombings and how brutal the Taliban truly are. There is so much that could go wrong while he's away and she just worries for his life.
Hassan was executed basically because he was a hazara, and the taliban wanted them out of Kabul. They had wanted to kill him but never had a good reason to until they found out he was living in Baba's house. They said that it is not ok for a hazara to be living in a house without a legal owner, and they said that Baba would not want him living there but that was not true.
Sean How do you think Soroya feels about Amir going to Pakistan?
I think Soroya was not really comfortable with him going because it was dangerous, but she knew it was something that he had to do because it was his nephew. She knew that he couldn't just let his nephew be out there in an unsafe enviornment. So she let him go even though she was not very ok with it.
